For all the bold lines and color Matisse used in this work there is an incredible transparency and lightness which fills this simple room. This is particularly noticeable in the strip of white to the right of the window which seamlessly travels from the top to the bottom of the canvas, like a stream of bright afternoon sunlight. This was bought by the Detroit Institute of Art in 1922 and was the first painting by Matisse to enter a public collection in the United States.
