The Reflection in the Mirror (Le reflet dans la glace)

Matisse presents the viewer with a woman and her reflection. As is characteristic of Matisse, the forms have been simplified to their essence and nowhere is that more apparent than the woman’s face. The woman’s face has been framed by the angular lines of the column to her left, mirror to her right and swooping drapery from below. Though only a few lines create the face, its elegance and beauty are undeniable. The elegance continues as the lines cascade down from the spiral of the woman’s hair to the ‘rhythmic arabesque curves of her drapery.’ (Sotheby’s, Impressionist & Modern Art (Part 1) 30)
