Still Life: Bouquet and Compotier (Nature morte: bouquet et compotier)
The central piece of this still life is a feathery bouquet articulated in deft strokes of yellow, peach, and pink paint. This softness continues in the black shapes on the wallpaper and the floral pattern on tablecloth. Matisse also uses the ‘the elegant compotier, or fruit dish, with five mandarins’ to pay homage to the modernist painter Cezanne.
