Portrait of Claude D.
This broad and simple representation of a face is reminiscent of ancient theater masks. Matisse masterfully manipulated every line to give it an expressive quality despite its simplicity. This energy is captured in the spirals in the pupils and the opened lips which give the face an wiley and playful energy.
