Nu assis dans un fauteuil, une jambe repliée (Nude sitting in a chair, one leg folded)

The female subject of this painting has a powerful and statuesque presence. Her body flows with naturalistic lines tracing the slack of her breasts and stomach, but her broad shoulders and classical pose brings to mind Michelangelo’s powerful sibyls from the ceiling of the Sistine chapel. Her pose is culled from classical paintings as well. Her head rests in a hand and in a pose that was associated with the melancholic temperament.
