Nature morte à la statuette (Still Life with Plaster Figure)
Matisse often augmented traditional genres of painting with modern aesthetics, in this case he has returned to the traditional genre of still-life. The objects placed on the table still retain a semblance of form, with a white statuette and a few fruits retaining their recognizable shape. However, Matisse created a background consisting of ‘large color patches liberated from any formal constraints.’ (Yale)
