Meditation (Portrait of Lorette)

The woman posing in this picture is a professional model, Lorette, whom Matisse began to work with towards the end of the first World War. He often took advantage of her professional experience in the variety of poses she cold execute, but in this painting he left her sitting in a simple wooden chair with her hand raised in a pensive gesture. The texture of the brushstrokes accentuates the movement of Loretta’s robe and hair and unlike Matisse’s later works the color has not been contained by outline.
