Lorette, one of Matisse’s favorite models, dominates the canvas both physically and spiritually. Matisse has portrayed Lorette in a muted and earthy color palette. Lorette’s hair and face are made from solid blocks of color writhing with gestural brushstrokes, recalling Matisse’s Fauvist style. While the composition is arguably simple the direct gaze of Lorette creates a connection with the viewer and stimulates interaction.
