Lorette with Long Locks
Here Matisse presents the viewer with a simple portrait of his model Lorette. The painting is almost monotone and yet there is an intensity that draws the viewer’s interest. Lorette’s face is centered with tendrils of black hair writing around almost like the head of the gorgon Medusa whose gaze turns people to stone. Lorette’s eyes are equally daunting. She looks out at the viewer with her lips pursed as if she is about to dole out some divine wisdom.
