Large Girl Reading (Grande liseuse)
The woman presented here is drawn in a very naturalistic manner, indicative of Matisse’s earliest works. The woman looks longingly at the illustration of the open book in front of her. The illustration, tilted into the viewer’s space, seems to depict a simplified human form. The form is shown on this page more characteristic of Matisse than the detailed and naturalistic woman drawn in this work.
