Horse, Rider, and Clown, plate V from the illustrated book Jazz, 1947
This work is one of the many vibrant cut outs Matisse made for his illustrated book Jazz. Cut outs were Matisse’s primary form of creative expression after a surgery for bowel cancer in the early 1940s left him bedridden. Matisse described this process as ‘painting with scissors.’
