Dancer Reflected in Mirror (Danseuse reflétée dans la glace)

Matisse’s dancer looks at herself in a large rectangular mirror. The viewer’s eye is instantly drawn to the areas of white starting at the tip of the point shoe and following the serpentine form of the dancer’s body. The shadows and highlights show off her muscular shoulders and back, while her reflected face is simply delineated with a few bold strokes. The exaggerated dip in her right hip and lightness of her right toe contain the potential for lyrical movement.
